ABYC Electrical Certification

There will be a four-day ABYC Electrical Certification course taking from Tuesday, November 29 through to Friday, December 2, 2011.

Facilitated by ABYC, this course is designed for the marine technician with at least three to five years’ experience working with marine electricity.  The student also needs some familiarity with ABYC electrical standards.  Course topics include:

  • electrical theory,
  • lead-acid batteries,
  • using a multi-meter,
  • battery testing,
  • generator sets,
  • inverters,
  • grounding and bonding systems,
  • troubleshooting,
  • and more.

Each student will be shipped an ABYC study guide which should be studied prior to class.  Your ABYC study guide contains all the pertinent ABYC standards for the course.

Course Times:
Tuesday, November 29th: 8:30am – 3:30pm
Wednesday, November 30th: 8:30am – 3:30pm
Thursday, December 1st: 8:30am – 3:30pm 
Friday, December 2nd: TBD – Exam

ABYC Facilitator Information:
Ed Sherman currently serves as the Curriculum Designer and Senior Instructor for all of the ABYC’s educational offerings.  He also serves as the Senior Staff writer for ABYC and manager of educational programming quality control.  Ed is a 35 year industry veteran who has worked in a variety of marine industry sales, service and management positions.

Ed is the past chairman of the Marine Technology Department at the New England Institute of Technology and past President of the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association.  He also served as President of the International Sailing Institute, a RI group that founded the first Maritime Theme Charter primary school in RI.

In 1998, Ed was the recipient of the Dennis Snow President’s Award from the American Boat Builders and Repairers Association for his curriculum development work for that group.

Ed is an award-winning technical writer who has authored many articles over the years for Cruising World Magazine and spent seven years as their Electronics Editor.  He is frequent contributor to Professional Boat Builder Magazine.

Fees:
NSBA Members - $450 + HST = $517.50
Non-NSBA Members - $500 + HST = $575.00

Meals and refreshments are not included, but there are a number of low-price options in and out of the building.

Registration:
Study guides are included in the course fee.  Registrants will receive ABYC Certification upon completing and passing the certification exam.  If you would like to attend or register an employee, please complete the ABYC Electrical Certification registration form and fax it back to the NSBA office by November 15th.  Or, you can email  Toba Offman.

Registration and full payment of fees on or before the 15th is required to be in attendance.  Cancellation of the course will occur if critical mass is not obtained by this date.  Please refer to the registration form for information on how reimbursement will be handled.
