Looking for a boat?

ABYC CE Standards Course

There will be a three-day ABYC CE Standards course taking from Tuesday, October 11 through to Thursday, October 13, 2011.

The course will compare and contrast the ABYC standards with the European Union requirements for CE marking.  During class you will discuss the various ABNYC standards and identify where they are in agreement and where they differ.

Some questions that will be covered:

  • What are the similarities and differences between ABYC E-11 and the equivalent ISO standards?
  • Are the new fuel system requirements for the United States compatible with CE?
  • Do you have to use ISO standards?
  • What is the “RCD”?
  • What is the “RSG”?
  • Who is “ICOMIA” and what is their function?
  • What are the boat categories and why are they used?
  • What are the different modules used for CE certification?
  • What are the Annex II components?
  • What is a “Declaration of Conformity”?
  • What is a builder’s plate?
  • What are the requirements of the boat owner’s manual?
  • What are the requirements for stability under ISO?
  • What are the requirements for structure under ISO?
  • What are the requirements for windows, portlights, hatches, deadlights and doors under ISO?
  • What are the requirements for sound and engine emissions?

The referenced ISO standards will not be made available for class due to copyright.  There are, however, ISO checklists available from the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) website.  Everyone in strongly recommended to visit the IMCI website to download and review the published documents prior to the start of class.

ABYC Facilitator information:
Our ABYC facilitator, Denis Bonneau, is CE inspector and National  Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) certification inspector to ABYC standards.  Denis began his career in the boating industry in 1987 after accepting a position with Sea Ray Boats Product Development and Engineering, helping to develop and document 16 – 25′ craft for manufacturing, then as an ABYC / United States Coast Guard compliance specialist for all boats under development.

In 1990 he returned to his home state of Maine, working as a marine technician for marinas along the southern coast and conducting systems and engine repair, electrical and electronics troubleshooting and installation, fibre-reinforced plastic repair and refinishing, and brightwork.

He returned to Sea Ray in 1992, working with the yacht division as an assembly tech, and was quickly promoted to manufacturing supervisor for the 63′ Sea Ray SSS, joining the manufacturing engineering department.  In late 1997, Denis moved into the aviation field doing 3D CAD modeling and prototype development for amphibious aircraft.

In early 2003, Denis moved to Tennessee and began working as a marine surveyor for Davis & Co. of Lisle, Illinois.  In 2006, he was invited by NMMA to become a certification inspector.  In 2007, he accepted an invitation to become a CE inspector for IMCI in Brussels, Belgium.  In 2009, he became an instructor for ABYC.

Denis continues today as an NMMA inspector, CE inspector and ABYC instructor, and consults for various companies in standards compliance.
